Elimination of Aftercooling for a Pumped LOX Cycle Booster Compressor In a pumped liquid oxygen (LOX) air separation unit (ASU) cycle, pumped LOX is typically vaporized and superheated against a boosted stream of air (or nitrogen). The idea is to eliminate the aftercooler of the booster compressor and pass the boosted gas direct to the pumped LOX exchanger. The air (or nitrogen) booster compressor, typically includes an aftercooler so that the boosted gas is supplied to the pumped LOX exchanger at ambient temperature. This is particularly important if the pumped LOX exchanger is of the aluminium plate fin type, as such exchangers have limited upper design temperatures. Especially for customers requiring high pressure gaseous oxygen (GOX), different exchanger types might be used, such as for example a wound coil exchanger. These exchanger types can tolerate being fed with boosted gas which has not been aftercooled. The advantages of the idea are: a) We eliminate an expensive high pressure aftercooler unit operation , and its associated instruments etc. b) The boost gas piping runs are simplified c) GOX is supplied to the customer at elevated temperature which can be an advantage for some customers d) Cooling water consumption is reduced e) We eliminate the potential for an aftercooler water leak into the cryogenic exchanger.
